Barrio Comida - Newcastle Quayside
Barrio Cominda is situated on Newcastle Quayside and consists of 2 shipping containers which gives is an authentic street food feel.
Barrio Comida first started out as a monthly pop up Mexican food event within the North East of England. The owners grew up in California where Mexican food and culture was a big part of their lives and after moving to the UK 10 years ago the owners began to crave those Mexican flavours and so from there Barrio Comida was born.
The menu focuses mainly on tacos, with a smaller selected of dishes made available to snack on whilst your tacos are being rustled up in the open plan kitchen for all to see, which I love. All of their corn tortillas are freshly made everyday before service starts, using a tortilla machine which they imported especially from Mexico - it doesn't get more authentic than this!
I opted for the Frijol tostadas & tortilla chips with guacamole, which were out of this world - you could just take the freshness of the ingredients which were well put together to create incredible flavours. They were jammed packed with flavour and nothing like I've tasted before. At first I did think £6 was a bit much for a bowl of chips but upon tasting them I can say they are more than worth it! All washed down with a lime soda which was so refreshing... & helped soothe the slight hangover I had from the night before!
The drinks menu is very in keeping with the style of the place, with all of their cocktails using 100% agave tequilas and mezcals.
I must say, I was very impressed with my visit and I can't believe it's took me this long to visit the place.
From the overall atmosphere of Barrio Comida providing a very chilled feel to, let's face it, one of the best views in the world looking out to Newcastle's Quayside and it's abundance of bridges - which I can image to be equally as beautiful during the evening with the twinkle of street lights. The decor is simple, yet effective. Think traditional Mexican vibes with colourful plastic table covers and decorative skulls (Calvavera) dotted around the place. Barrio Comida really did get me excited, there is just something new to take in everywhere you look. I'm a very visual person and I mean, just look at the colours within this restaurant - I was in my element.
Overall this was such an amazing experience which I highly recommend to others. If you're wanting a relaxing catch up with friends and a relaxing date night with the other half then this is the place for you. Vibrant, fresh and authentic, sticking to its street food root, this restaurant delivers on all levels and does not break the bank. It is recommended you choose 3 tacos per serving, which will cost you around £12 so not bad at all. Let's not forget the staff, friendly, knowledgable and made us feel relaxed.
So next time you visit Newcastle's Quayside, be sure to check them out, you will not be disappointed.
