If you follow me on Instagram, you'll know just how much I am completely and utterly in love with Greece. Having visited 7 Greek Islands in the last year, it's safe to say the county has stolen my heart! From the hospitality of the Greeks to their fresh, traditional food - I cannot get enough of all things Greek... queue Greek Night at Michelangelos.
Michelangelos is a family run Mediterranean restaurant situated in the leafy town of Ryton, a 15 minute drive from Newcastle city centre. With is ample free parking, an on site hotel & tapas bar next door - this place has it all and after a recent refurbishment to the conservatory area, this place is the place to be. The restaurant is extremely child friendly so, as always, I brought my partner in crime and side kick, Jack my son, along to the Greek night because, let's face it, he's equally as obsessed with Greece as I am (no influence from me whatsoever 😂).
The Greek Night is one of many organised themed nights at Michelangelos and the menu was the perfect balance of food, flavours and variations of meat or meat free options that there was something for everyone. After much toing and froing I eventually decided on my options:
Starter - Garida Saganaki - King prawns in a tomato base with feta cheese and ouzo.
Main - Lavraki - Pan roasted sea bass served on roasted peppers, olives & capers.
Dessert - Baklava
When my starter arrived I was very impressed, I am a huge fan of seafood (can you tell by my choices from the menu) and I had at least 5 HUGE king prawns in my dish. The flavours were fantastic and the feta cheese was über creamy and had the perfect crumbling texture. I could have ate it all over again in a heart beat!
Next up, the main course which had a lot to live up to - could it keep up with the starter... of course it could, this is Michelangelos cuisine we're talking about and in my option is the best restaurant around. When my main arrived, the presentation was fab and it was the perfect portion. The sea bass was succulent and juicy and this really complimented the crispy texture of the roasted peppers, olives and capers. Again, I could have ate this all over again... but then again I was bursting at the seams and I still have dessert to come.
During this time, we are entertained by a flurry of traditional Greek folk music and my little boy was stealing the show with, i must say quite frankly, absolutely fantastic Greek dancing - this kid has rhythm. Greece is my happy place and needless to say, right now I was in my happy place. The atmosphere, the food, the hospitality- everything was perfect, everyone was in such a fantastic mood and we could not have asked for a more perfect evening.
My child has turned into a bit of a fuss pot recently so, unfortunately, he let the team down by not part taking in the Greek menu. Instead he chose a kids pizza, salad and chips from the children's menu which you also received a free drink and ice cream for only £4.95. Not only that but the children's menus double up as a colouring / puzzle book which kept him entertained throughout the evening too.
The cherry on the cake was the baklava, I mean who doesn't love baklava! I think I was pretty much rolled out of the door as I was full to the brim. The price of this 3 course meal was £15.95 which is amazing. To say you can easily pay £15 plus for a sea bass main, this is definitely worth the money and I'd quite happily pay more for the 3 course set menu.
Needless to say I cannot wait for the next Greek night however, there is another theme on Thursday 16th November celebrating the French wine festival "Boujolais Nouveau," which will feature a one off, specially selected 3 course French menu for the price of £15.95... table for two again please!
