Chaophraya Thai Restaurant - Newcastle

28.03.2018

Chaophraya is nestled amongst the exciting, new leisure complex within Intu Eldon Square. It’s restaurant boasts elegant yet contemporary Thai interior with amazing views across Newcastle, over looking the iconic Grey’s Monument.

Diners access the restaurant via a scenic lift to the rooftop, where you will experience an authentic taste of Thailand, sampling local delicacies along with famous Thai hospitality and cocktails. Perched on top of the new Intu Eldon Square’s Greys Quarter, you are taken away from the cluster of generic food chains you see everywhere and are whisked away to an exotic dining experience.

Since it’s opening I’ve been very eager to visit the venue so, you can imagine my excitement when we were kindly invited along to review the restaurant. We were greeted at the bar area by a jolly young lady who took us to our table which had been previously reserved. We were handed our menus but first, the pig inside of me tucked into the prawn crackers which were left on our table. The views from our table where amazing, a direct view of Grey’s Monument & Grey street. The hustle and bustle of people below looking like ants as we watched down from the great height of the restaurant.

My husband and I opted for the lunch time menu where you could choose:

- 1 course for £8.95
- 2 courses for 13.95
- 3 courses for £17.95.

Starters:

For starters we chose the vegetable spring rolls & steamed dumplings. I really wanted to try their chicken satay as I’ve heard things but unfortunately they were unavailable on this occasion. The starters were presented very nice, in modern dishes and nearly finished with a sprinkling of fresh chillis and watercress. The dumplings were lovely and juicy, I wish I didn’t agree to share with the hubby now!

Mains:

The hubby went for the Thai red chicken curry - A red curry paste from dried chillies in coconut milk with pineapple, courgettes, Thai aubergine and sweet basil. I, obviously l, chose the Crispy Pork Belly with Thai Basil. I’m a huge fan of crispy pork belly so this was right up my street. Again both dishes were presented really well. I couldn’t comment on how the hubby’s tasted, he inhaled his within minutes so it certainly got a thumbs up from him. My dish was extremely tasty, very well seasoned with a good balance of flavours.

Dessert:

To say we were both absolutely full to the brim, we just had to try the desserts. I was fit to burst so went for the prosecco and peach sorbet. OH MY GOD, it was out of this world. Super refreshing and tasted amazing, definitely the right choice for me! The hubby chose the vanilla ice cream, he’s boring like that.

Drinks:

Seems as it was the husband’s 30th birthday he treat himself to a large glass of Pinot Grigio. He was at work till late that night and I’m sure if he wasn’t he would have had a few more. I, myself, was driving so couldn’t partake in a tipple.... however Chaophraya does do none alcoholic cocktails so I tried out the Mai Mao (mixed red berries with mango & lychee juices) & a Chaophraya Fruit Punch (pineapple, orange & lime juices with grenadine). Personally the Mai Mao was my favourite, very fruity and sweet tasting where as the Fruit Punch was a bit too tarte for me personally.

Overall, we had a very pleasant experience. It was really nice to try something a bit different. Do not be out off by the extravagant exterior and luxurious interior, we were looked after so well & were made to be feel relaxed. It was nice to escape life in the fast lane and spend some time watching the world go by whilst sampling some fusion food. The array of seating areas and booths made you forget you where in Newcastle, especially the all weather terrace which was heated. Needless to say we’ll certainly be back when the weather gets better to sit outside on the terrace. Maybe next time we’ll sample from their main menu too!
