DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Newcastle International Airport

10.09.2019

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel is an internationally recognised brand so when I was contacted for a gifted stay at the hotel, naturally, I accepted. Double Tree by Hilton Hotel Newcastle International Airport is situated adjacent to Newcastle International Airport and is approximately 7 miles from Newcastle City Centre.

We decided to coincide our trip with our 3 year wedding anniversary as the hotel, also, kindly gifted us drinks and a meal at Newcastle’s newly opened Banyan restaurant. I think, personally, I wouldn’t have necessarily booked a hotel quite this far out for Newcastle City Centre given we were planning on spending the evening in Newcastle City Centre, however this opinion was swayed after our experience of staying at this hotel.

Upon arrival, the friendly and informative reception staff greeted us. Check in was super quick, everything organised and ready from the get go. There’s nothing more frustrating when you check in and the staff are yet to print out your forms; which you then need to sign said abundance of forms – this certainly wasn’t the case at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Newcastle. What was even better was, after we check in, we were given a warm chocolate cookie each. I mean, personally, this is better than a glass of champagne in my opinion… and yes, the cookie was amazing!

DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Newcastle boasts 179 upscale guests rooms; which are ideal for any traveller given the location. We were kindly gifted a Queen Guest Room, which starts from a pretty decent £61 per night depending on how far in advance you book. Within the room we received complimentary WIFI, a 37” LCD TV, Sweet Dream bed, desk, air conditioning and refrigerator. My husband was pleased with the tea and coffee facilities when we arrived at our rooms so he made himself a coffee whilst I popped open the champagne.

Our room faced over Newcastle International Airport with views over the runway, with Newcastle Airport being my second home I loved this. I don’t know what the fascination is but I love watching planes take off and land although I hate flying, which is odd given how much I fly each year. I could have sat and watched the view from the window all evening but after my bottle of champagne, our meal beckoned. The Metro link rail service is a 2 minute walk from the hotel and based within Newcastle Airport. The journey into the City Centre will take 20 minutes or so and will cost you £5.10 for a day saver per person. I’d highly recommend this form of transport and it was quick, effective and takes you right into Newcastle City Centre. We hopped off at Monument Metro Station with Banyan restaurant situated straight opposite which was perfect.

Restaurant chain Banyan Bar & Kitchen opened in the former Jamie’s Italian in late March this year. This stylist bar and restaurant is span across two floors and includes a private dining room. Alongside an extensive cocktail menu, the venue serves up breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner with options including locally sourced fish of the day, chateaubriand and healthy power bowls. Banyan is quite possibly the most Instagram-able bar in Newcastle, with it’s gorgeous flower walls dotted all over the venue and the mirror in the ladies loo is the perfect place to snap your outfit pictures.

Our host for the evening took us to our reserved area on the second floor, where we were given our menus and a bottle of complimentary prosecco over ice was brought over to our table. For our starters, we went for the “Slow cooked belly pork” and “Panko crumbled king prawns.” Both dishes looked visually appealing and my belly pork melted in the mouth yet burst with flavour from it’s sticky Cantonese Char Siu glaze. For our mains, we chose the “California sushi bowl’ and ‘Chicken schnitzel.” My dish was full of flavour colour, yet again, and was packed with smoked salmon, avocado, cucumber, pickled carrot, red cabbage and sushi rice. The dish was accompanied with a fresh mango salsa, which was to die for, and a teriyaki sauce. Banyan is most certainly a welcomed addition to the growing number of luxe bars and eateries within Newcastle City Centre. It’s staff were friendly and helpful, guiding us through the menu whilst giving us recommendations. This was our first visit to Banyan but will most certainly not be our last – maybe next time we’ll grab a table and start working our way through their cocktail menu.

Stomachs pleasantly full, we headed out for a few cocktails before getting the Metro back to the hotel and hitting the hay. Breakfast is served from 04:30am at the hotel, perfect if you’re catching an early morning flight. We, however, missed breakfast due to taking full advantage of not having a child and having a well deserved lie in. My husband checked us out whilst I had a wander around the hotel. The hotel is home to Fratello’s restaurant; which serves popular Italian dishes. It is quite an informal restaurant and has an outdoor terrace area where I could imagine would be nice to enjoy a cocktail or two before going into the airport. There is also a bar at the hotel, serving up local cask ales, spirits and a modest wine list. For you gym buffs, there is an on site gym on the 3rd floor which is 24 hour with amazing, outdoor views. Parking here is £8.50 per night, which is very good given its close proximity to the airport.

Overall, our stay was more than what we could have asked for. It certainly exceeded our expectations and we’d most definitely stay here again, maybe next time we would check out the local village of Ponteland. From start to finish we were very well looked after and this was a wedding anniversary made that extra bit special with the help and thanks of DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel.
